Special Defence = RESILIENCE
The more resilience you have, the more energy you can negate, your enemy beams or whatever doesn't hurt as much.

To be Honest I still do not understand what category of traits SpDef represents.

From what I understand:
>HP: Meat, amount of flesh, blood
>Atk: Physical strength, muscles
>Def: Hardness of skin,shell etc
>SAtk: Mana,Chi, control and output of telekinetic attacks
>SpDef: ?????? resistance to mental attacks?? Intelligence??? Foresight??
>Spd: Reflexes (speed is expressed by the movepool)

I pretty sure everyone can agree with the above.

Yes, fat can be one of the attributes HP represents, basically the amount of flesh. Remember the huge Normal mons, Snorlax and Blissey contrasted with the huge thick-shelled Golem and Onix that have tiny HPs(they actual creature is very small inside).

Yes, that is what I was going for in my previous comment. If you think about it, only mental-spirit attacks should interact with SpD.
A FlameThrower and a FirePunch will just burn your skin, same effect. Confusion and Shadow Sneak however attack directly the mind and soul, respectively.
