As someone with experience in both, 2D art assets would have to be drawn for every interaction. Models you just need one model and rig, then adjust the rig for each interaction needed.
When making several animations, it's so much harder and tedious to hand draw consistent pieces used. 3D models keeps the consistency for you so long as you're not breaking the model apart with insane stretches and deformations.
If you want to use Flash animation, then it would technically be faster but good lord if it ain't ugly when not perfect.
