I just don't know if we can expect expertly designed teams from the main series anymore. At least if they had six Pokémon it would stop players from winning by just having more mons than the leader.
I played a Pokémon XD hack recently and the hard trainers were extremely well-made. They didn't give them six Pokémon until near the end of the game, but they had good team synergy and there was often a trick to each one. I think the double battle format helps with that, but I'd still love to see a mainline game where the leaders had well-made teams.
