Back in the 90s, most people either didn't like or didn't care about Bulbasaur but recently it got huge popularity because of bulbaganda and everyone jumped ship because Charizard got too much shilled that many people felt disliking it.
Detective Pikachu movie gave Bulbasaur a boost of popularity as well, but despite all of that, it didn't find popularity among casuals because it's not the dragon.
