Shuckle is based off barnacles, which are crustaceans, which are arthropods.

Arthropod = Bug

Its name in Japanese is ツボツボ Tsubotsubo, which comes from 壷 tsubo (jar) and 富士壺 fujitsubo (barnacle).

Crustaceans are more often not-Bug than they are Bug-type, though, especially in the early gens. The multiple holes in its shell do seem to be inspired by a cluster of barnacles, though.
