I think the best of it was having both legendaries, the postgame facilities and a second save file as well as obtaining the Mythicals (availiable only on the new versions) and forms.
Overall, they have always done this practice. The problem is that the other games felt pretty alright and people started to get used to this practice by Ruby/Sapphire, but Sword/Shield have been pretty mixed, even more than the 3DS titles, and that stuff like the National Dex and unpolished Wild Area are a thing now.
