Your violent video games analogy works well in this sense too, because while kids I knew growing up who played excessively violent games didn't turn out to be criminals or violent, they were the same type of kid to harm animals, and many of them did.
It's not so much about the crime they might commit, so much as it is about the spirit, or perhaps the "little crime" that one might commit. Like a lolicon checking out a young girl in public, despite not being some deranged rapist as some people on this site seem to believe.
tldr; yeah there's a little correlation, but it's not as strong as some say. But still, it's a non-zero correlation.
