I wonder how it works in other languages. Spanish/Italian verbs usually do not take a pronoun, so "es/è" can imply any gender. French requires the pronoun, but only uses "il" and "elle" when referring to a person, unless it's occupationally. German has a neuter pronoun, though -- er/sie/es. Are there lots of German trannies? This is all assuming that the tranny illness has reached Europe, though.

Good lord. And yeah, the German thing is kind of funny: they DO have a gender-neutral pronoun, and have for hundreds of years, but it's only traditionally been used to refer to inanimate objects or nouns that take the neuter pronoun (mostly inanimate objects). So it's part of their culture to treat it as non-human as possible. And now they're trying to use it for the trannies, but they're trying to humanize it in the process and give it warmth in some way, which isn't going well I imagine.

It IS a mental disorder. It's called Gender Dysphoria, and it's classified as a diagnosable condition in the DSM V (the official manual psychiatrists use to classify and diagnose disorders). The "dysphoria" comes from living in a body whose sex does not match what the person feels they are in their brain. Once they transition, the dysphoria is supposed to go away, since the two are no longer at odds with one another. But of course, no man can ever truly become a biological woman, and vice versa, so they will always suffer from some distress.

It is begrudgingly accepted in cases where there is ambiguity and the "it" is a person, but it is still inelegant and should be avoided whenever possible.
