Kinda unfair to use only starters (especially recent ones) to showcase the design philosophy of an entire Gen, I'd argue they're the worst example to use since they're totally detached from the rest of the dex.
Gens 5-8 amped up the bizarre, quirky designs a lot, but the Starters are always really boring, mostly humanoid, mascots because they're designed to be the 'face' of the gen. So they try too hard to appeal to every demographic and have become really bland.

In general this isn’t true, and this image really indicates the offensiveness of thin silhouettes. Also Inteleon is more of a basilisk which has many of inteleon’s traits. Its costuming is if anything less pronounced than Empoleon’s

The biggest problem is Intelleon looks too much like it's wearing clothes it would be a little more bearable if he had like a scaled pattern. Intelleon's other problem just stems from his theme he looks too bare bones and it all part of his secret gadget gimmick.

if we talk about more natural designs I think Venusaur and Sceptile are the best ones at pulling it off.

Don't worry, Machamp is cancer as well. Gen 1 wasn't immune to charactermons. Fighting types in general were plagued with them with Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee and Machamp. I never liked nor used any of them for obvious reasons.

Pretty sure the Salandit line was based off of a Hawaiian legend and had little to no influence from furries.
