They never make this shit backward compatible. It wouldn't be difficult to do but they aren't competent enough programmers. Even the Pokémon RBY to Bank transfer just gave you random IVs instead of converting the gen 1 IVs.

It has always been like that except for the gen2 time machine
No coming back from gen3 to gen4, gen4 to gen5, gen5 to bank and bank was also separated into two compartiments for gen6 and gen7 that didn't allow for reverse transfer
