The point is that the systems were in place for generally no extra charge as you were expected to have access to a link cable or another DS. And it's not like that's unrealistic unless you're an only child with zero friends, cousins, clsssmates or something like that.
Sure, in some situations transferring Pokemon from precious games wasn't free, but that was solely due to how the hardware worked. There's no reason for Home to be a paid subscription based service with what the Switch and 3DS are capable of, especially at 3x the cost of Bank which was already a gigantic scam.
Unless the GB, GBA and DS could connect to a cloud then it doesn't really feel fair to fault them for the fact you needed shit to connect to with their inter-connective features.
