Nostalgia is part of it, but more is how much you truly enjoyed the environment, from the locations, to the soundtrack, to the NPC trainers. and FAR more is how much you like your pokebros - not just their design, but how they impact you personally throughout the game.
People have different tastes. For example, Ruby and Sapphire (I'm guessing) didn't resonate with you, while BW2 did. This is a problem, because EVERYONE wants to have that magical experience again, where a game just feels good, but nobody has the same idea of what "good" is.
And gamefreak isn't helping. Like the weather, it doesn't much care about the people living in a blizzard. Never has. If they did, we wouldn't have had 2 versions from the start.
As with most things, you just gotta enjoy what you can, and know when to leave.
