>>42581855I have my problems with Orbeetle.
It's a Bug/Psychic lady bug with psychic powers. There's nothing that connects lady bugs to brain power or psychic related phenomena. Lady Bugs aren't known for being the "smartest" insect. They aren't known to have "super senses" akin to fictional psychic abilities. They don't use psychological defenses or offenses in nature. It has no reason to be psychic type besides the fact that it's just a mish-mash of unrelated concepts. It's just as bad as "my moms blue dog." And other similar criticisms. You can easily poke holes in the logic behind it, which can end up making the design itself pretty weak. And in my opinion concepts/ideas are just as important as the design itself.
Not only that it's brain is located in the insects carapuce while the rest of the body, which is also anthropromophized for no reason, just hangs down as if the designer had no idea what to do with the legs. Granted, it's probably supposed to play with the theme of it using it's mind over it's physical body, but still that could have done a lot better with it. Such as giving it that actual anatomy of a ladybug this time around instead of rehashing a simialr anatomy to Ledians, just with more sharp edges. It doesn't seem reflect what kind of environment it lives in, nor what it eats, etc. It kind of suffers from concept first and design second, when both should be taken account equally.
This not to say I think Orbeetle is the worst. In a vaccum and without out taking into account some knowledge in charcater/monster design the design is pretty harmless. But pales in comparison to other mons. For example, take Centiskorch. It's a Fire/Bug Pokémon based on a fire centipede. But with the "fire" part being literal. It's flame and glowing spots are also a reference to Fire Centipedes natural bioluminescence. So not only does it makes since type wise but also makes since because it's based on something consistent with the entire lines theme.
