Same argument can be made for Nomura and Square Enix - he was an artist first. Would make sense for creative writers, etc to move into director/producer roles but evidently they thought "nah, lets go for the quirky creators that made charatcers look good and areas sound awesome!"

Both Masuda and Nomura were great in their fields but way out of their depth now.

Because if you tell people the Pokemon will be sold back to them later, they'll get angry and not buy the game, but if they already have it, then the sunk cost fallacy will make them pay to fix the broken mess they already bought. If you tell them they'll all be patched in now, though, people might skip the DLC and wait for the game of the year edition or whatever that just has the full Pokedex, whereas if you wait, they'll buy the DLC now, then buy the game again next year.

Masuda was the assistant director of gen 2, and the mainline director of gens 3, 4, and 5. He clearly knows how to make a good game. That's what makes this all so infuriating. It's one thing for someone to be incompetent. It's so much worse when you see someone with actual talent just wither away because of laziness. Like if he were 70 and growing only and senile, it'd be one thing, but the guy's like 40. He has no excuse other than laziness.

It's the same sort of situation that happened with George Lucas and Star Wars. Lucas is great when there are people between him and the final project, to tell him what are good ideas and bad ideas. He specifically wanted other people to direct the prequels, he tried to get other directors to do it, but no one wanted to be the people between Lucas and his vision - Even though that's exactly what he wanted and knew that's what would work.
