Magnolia had a cameo in the first Galar episode, and Leon is appearing in the upcoming one
The main issue is that Ash is the only main character that isn't an anime OC. The SM anime didn't really start following the games until its second arc, but we still had Lillie and four of the Trial Captains from the games as main characters. So even if things were different at first, the two still shared the same cast of characters.
