Turns out many pokemon fans were brainwashed as kids. Changes in brain activity are irreversible, can be detected even in adulthood and add to the eccentric behavior of the brain!

What does doing taxes have to do with classifying fictional creatures? This is a study on being able to recognize things, not functionality in society. You don't use the same part of your brain to identify things as you do taxes.

But i want to add that it might be true that some people can be more stimulated by pokemon media due to having sort of been indoctrinated by playing the game for too long. How many anons here who says they only plays pokemon arent trolling ? Or all these furry thread or those who complain about unfuckable pokemon or how they can only fap to pokeporn ? Some might not be trolls. I agree this study is bullshit but it comes from a good idea

All it found was that people who grew up consuming pokemon media route their visual recognition of pokemon to the specialized recognition portion of their brain, which is the region of the brain responsible for recognizing frequently recurrent types of specialized pattern recognition, as opposed to the more generalized processing and pattern recognition that the rest of your visual centers use.
Other examples of things that stimulates are faces, writing, traffic signs. It’s the type of thing which would probably also have been used when humans were hunter gatherers to spot and identify specific berries amongst bushes.

Basically all the study means is that your brain’s recognized that there are a lot of Pokemon, that they have various specific visual nuances which distinguish them, and that they are something you saw fairly frequently. So instead of repeatedly routing it over to generalize processing to identify the visual same input for the umpteenth time, your brain says, “Wait, I remember these. It’s one of those things again.”, and kicks it on over to specialized processing which has more easily reached dedicated pathways for specifically identifying whatever that thing is for the millionth time.

So it's bullshit. fMRI measures extremely small changes in signal intensity, there's a lot of variation in your measurement and it could also be that the guy's hypothesis was just completely wrong from the get-go. For all we know the Pokémon group consisted exclusively of turbo-autists and the region that showed activation is just associated with autism.

I mean, I'm sure memorizing 800 pokemon does something to the plasticity of your brain, I'd be surprised if it didn't. I really doubt you can pick that up with a method like fMRI though.
