I don't mind his design, he's just so plain and interesting.
Also the way he reacts to type advantages the same way as his novice brother and tries using a vanilla Pokeball to catch a legendary really gives me the impression that luck was a factor in his success.

I only like him because he took the role of a champion seriously. Also turning the battle tower into a place to encourage trainer growth was a cool concept for an ex-champion. That being said, they should've literally turned it in an academy to teach new players interested in battling some mechanics or strats like Earl's Academy in Stadium 2.
