there's no reason to ever play diamond or pearl once you have platinum. same with emerald, same with crystal. arguably same with yellow if you ignore the shit removal of starter choice.
the first versions are always completely skippable except in your one cited "pokemon gray" example where the first version is at least different. it's still skippable, but it avoids the tedium of having to replay all the shit you'd already done last game.
