As all ribbons have unique titles, this means that every single previous gen ribbon title is limited to Pokemon that come from that gen.
For example, the ribbon for beating Red in HeartGold and SoulSilver lets you give the Pokemon the title of "Living Legend" so that when you send them out it says "Go, <nickname> the Living Legend!"
I'd argue that's even better than the diploma since you can't show off the diploma to other players.
