They're both linear so what does it matter? At least Unova has side areas and some backtracking but it's not like Hoenn or Sinnoh which have many intersecting paths and non-linear maps.

A circle is decent design in the sense that it loops around and recontextualizes the old areas as shortcuts to the newer ones. The best parts of Kanto, Hoenn, etc are the small concentric circles.
Straight lines are worthless. They aren't places to explore. They don't contribute to world-building. They're just filler.

The "line", because it has worse map layouts and less puzzles/dungeons than the "circle". It's not the outward shape of the region that matters, but the dungeon layouts within it

unova is kind of a shit version of it but it's still there
notice how nimbasa and castelia are the most densely packed because you come back around to them. nimbasa is a sort of hub
the earlier games did it much better though.

you don't notice it because they roadblock you so often, but there's no interconnectedness and only the bare minimum of side paths. if you walk from the town to the battle tree you see almost everything

You fundamentally misunderstand the straight line criticism. Aside from the graveyard NONE of these routes have optional side paths.hell im pretty sure the graveyward was mandatory.

Route 8 and 6 were my favorite. That type of route design is great because it’s interconnected with the environment and roaming Pokémon actually interact with said environment

It’s not mandatory, like the Haina desert, the beach or the building at the mount in the other route that appears in the image, i think it’s route 12(?). Like lots of examples in Alola.

And not just optional places make a region less linear, branches and hidden parts are a thing that really matters. And Alola has lots.

The absolute biggest issue I have with the Hoenn and LGPE remakes is this. Like, yes: the original games were squares and rectangles because TECHNOLOGY limited what you could do on those gaming systems. But that does NOT mean Kanto and Hoenn are bizarre, alt-world regions that are entirely composed of geometric shapes. They clearly were just lazy, but even going from Kalos to in XY to Hoenn in ORAS was a huge downgrade.
