There was only one Dragon type move in Gen I and it wouldn't do shit against it. Ice moves wouldn't do shit against it either because it's Water type. So part Flying type to keep it balanced.

Poor planning on GF's part. Was supposed to be a dragon until they realised they gave the player a powerful physical attacker that resists the 4 major types at level 20.
Despite everything, it's still a beast.

It wasn't a balance issue. You think gamefreak gave a shit about balance in Gen 1? The same gen with the Psychic type? The same gen with one fixed damage dragon move? The same gen with no good bug moves?

The real reason is extremely simple to understand. Pokemon had gimmick types back then. Dragon and Ghost were these gimmick types, unique to one family of Pokemon only. The concept was abandoned later down the line. Simple as that.

Gen 1 was designed around the single player adventure, not multiplayer competitive. The original concept for link play was trading, not battling. By that metric, it was fine.

No I didn't. I just said it's bad design to just shove a type in like that just to make the penultimate boss hard. Ghost and Dragon should've at least had another family for them so Lance didn't have such a strange team, that and so Agatha would have more than 2 Gengars and 2 non ghost types.

How is that bad game design for a standard RPG? If anything, the Elite Four almost all having to go off-Type makes them more distinct than Gym Leaders. Lorelei's the only one who doesn't show off her Type well.

Agatha only has 3 ghost from the same family with weak moves and she has to resort to using Arbok and a Golbat. She might as well just be a slightly more bullshit Koga. Lorelei is basically Misty and Lance is what Falkner is since almost his whole team is flying type. I get the idea was the E4 used niche types to make them distinct, but I felt they could've done a better job handling it.

Also for a good basis to bad balance in game design, compare this to RSE's E4/Champ. 2 starters have way too much of an advantage and the fire cock literally breaks 3 of the members, and cucks the champ in less then 10 minutes.

Wow even more of a reason for me to bash GF's lack of hindsight when making what's suppose to be the hardest fights in the maingame. I get it's for children but games like Mother 2 and Ratchet & Clank 2 were marketed towards kids/early teens.

These are Elite 4 members who rely too much on a single type, the Gen 1 Elite 4 actually does this better by using themed Pokemon who are "pretty close." The only time I'd say an Elite 4 member really failed to represent at all is Flint, for obvious reasons.

Besides the whole point of dragon type was that it was supposed to be discovered in battle what it was weak to (which was ice) and this wouldn't have worked if you had a Water/Dragon type pokemon. There's a reason only Kingdra had that typing, because if Gyarados had it he'd break the game even harder than Alakazam

Psychic being weak to Ghost wouldn't matter anyway since there were no good Ghost moves to capitalize on that weakness. The real 'balance' was that Abra felt hard to catch and was another Magikarp, so when you got Kadabra and then figured out Alakazam you felt amazing.

At the time of Gen 1, in comparison to the only other dragon types, its typing stood at the top along with its pure power and movepool. It not being 'dragon' type but a dual type similar to the dragon type gave it it's own advantages. I mean even now gyarados is still a respectfully powerful mon.

Lorelei has the best team of the kanto e4. She would legitimately be the hardest trainer if they all had the same level pokemon.
