figure out a different type dynamic. Fighting/Psychic/Dark is another triangle they could go with, for example. As long as the first form isn't Ghost, Steel or Rock they can pretty much make them any type they want.

At this point they don't even need starters to be effective against one another in a triangle. Considering your earliest rival is nowadays more likely to pick the starter that's weaker than your starter and even back in the days of Blue and Silver picking stronger starters than you your first battle just comes down to Growls and Tackles instead of typed moves, it wouldn't make much of a difference if your starter options were types that had no interaction with each other at all like Electric-Poison-Ice or Bug-Dragon-Normal, etc.

Not using fire/water/grass, or starting with secondary typing and getting fire/water/grass with evolutions. Force starters like pikachu or evee dont count.

Starters are not supposed to be complex or "interesting". They're supposed to be tutorial pokemon. That's why you have the 3 types, it's to teach you about the basic elemental system and slowly introduce more complex pokemon interactions.

Late game pokemon are supposed to be interesting and deep. Early pokemon are supposed to be mascots and easy to use.

It's the best beginners ability possible. Most beginners will use all the same type on 1 pokemon instead of mixing it up. And it lets them steal free wins when they should lose for using the wrong move and instead do a shit load of extra damage.

Hidden abilities exist for people who want other abilities. But as a tutorial 'mon, there is literally no better ability. It's almost easy mode when you're starting to lose.

Try do something different like having the regions Pikaclone be the middle stage of one of the starters, having a Water starter be a non-aquatic animal that’s extinct, doing a starter that’s a bug

Here’s an example
Grass/Electric Beaver starter
Fire/Bug Spider starter
Water/Ground T-Rex starter.

If they do another type triangle like Fairy/Fighting/Steel. Maybe have all the starters start out as pure normal but gain the typing they’re assigned upon evolution and get rid of the normal typing upon the final form
Example
Fighting starter - Werewolf/caveman hybrid
Normal > Normal/Fighting > Electric/Fighting
Fairy starter - Faerie dragon
Normal > Normal/Fairy > Dragon Fairy
Steel starter - Goose or Hippogriffin
Normal > Normal/Steel > Ice/Steel

Casuals aren't going to check ability changes as things evolve. As much as you would like it, it will screw over casuals for the same reason keeping it saves 'em.

Fighting/Psychic/Dark doesn't 100% work because psychic doesn't effect dark, so it's somewhat unbalanced
Rock/Flying/Fighting works
I'm sure there are other trios that work the exact same way as grass/water/fire but I can't think of any right now

Make another Eevee-like Pokemon with varying evolution branches. But instead of typing, its evolution is based on stat distribution. Something like Tyrogue where its current stats determined how it'll evolve.

Most beginners are going to potion their shit up as soon as they get anywhere near the HP range where the ability kicks in and will never make use of it.
They're great if you're an expert player who knows how to use it effectively without getting BTFO, but for casuals the starters may as well not have abilites at all.
