Game Freak target a kiddy market, to ALWAYS have a crop of new players to introduce (that's why targeting adults requires you to actually work on your franchise, unless you're cod or fifa, the same but prettier doesn't fly). That they also haven't messed with a formula they knew worked since '96 means they know they'll be able to get older returnees more easily, as aside from more 'mons and a couple different types, depending on when the player left, the same basic experience hasn't changed that much. Still go out as a new trainer, get a pokémon, build a team, collect the 8 plot tokens, go on to become champion and crucially, still has that spirit of Game Freak, even if that spirit's focused on the newest generation, instead of yours.
