You guys don’t get his character at all. Imagine having the last thing your grandfather gives to you before he dies die stolen right before your eyes, in your little sister’s possession beforehand no less, and being too young and weak to do anything about it. And it’s not like it’s some necklace or a card, it’s a pet, a literal member of the family.

He wasn’t a rival to the player, he used the journey with the player to help him become stronger and find clues on the whereabouts of the people who took Purrloin and how to get it back. The battles he had with you were training and tests of experience. Hugh could not give a single less of a fuck about anything else especially in relation to the Pokémon League

Hugh has a good design, an amazing theme, I can admire his autism to try to get a pokemon back that reasonably he should just give up on.
On paper, he's a good character, but honestly, I just don't really like him. I can't pinpoint it, maybe it's just he doesn't really, care about the mc, I know it's a meme that everyone sucks mc's dick but everything I remember Hugh doing seems so disconnected to anything your doing.

If you replay bw2 call Hugh throughout the story and he'll talk more, get more glimpses into his personality.
I know that if you attempt to go the cave route to get to the city that has the 8th gym (when you're told to go there during the story) he'll call and ask wtf dude just take the underwater bridge.

Did you even play B2W2? He was your friend, but also an edgelord who wasn't even aiming to be champion, but just seeking revenge against Team Plasma. He was unique in that he was hotheaded and aggressive, but directed his antagonism towards the antagonists and regularly supported and fought alongside the protagonist as well. He was Gladion before Gladion came into existence.

It's honestly a really good way to have your rival constantly lose to you and not have them look pathetic. You both have entirely separate goals and the battles are to help you both grow stronger for your own purposes. I feel like every rival after him has just seemed pathetic, Hau, Serena and Hop are all characters that stop being fun to battle and you just start to feel bad beating them because they're nowhere near your equal.
