It looks better in 2D in general. Same goes for Inteleon and Cinderace. I blame Creatures Inc for making them look ugly. GF should go back to sprites.
That all being said, no drum is indeed an improvement, because it looks like it'd actually use its muscles on you instead of on some wacky drum.

The designs have too many gimmicks to work in 2D. They'd end up like Samurott where its first impression was the sprite that didn't even show it using its swords.

I agree in that regard. It seems like a matter of picking your poison. Some Pokemon like Haxorus had great sprites but then the 3D model made its legs look awkward.

Krookodile, Sceptile, Charizard, and many others all have fine proportions. Inteleon has ridiculously skinny arms for giant hands and a large almond head on a skinny neck. Not to mention, its tail is thicker than its torso which makes no sense.

I don't mind the drum

What I question is why it NEEDS a drum to manipulate plants when other Grass types can do that on their own.

The only real reason seems to be to complete Galar's band quartet:

Obstagoon as the singer
Amped Toxtricity as the guitar player
Low-Key Toxtricity as the bass playr
Rillaboom as the drummer

Except adding the drum makes it so that Rillaboom does not fit in with the others, who are all able to make their sounds naturally through their body. I still can't believe they had the easiest design concept ever in a chest drumming gorilla but fucked it up while making Toxtricity do it right in the same gen.
