Meganium (starter from Elm)
Arcanine (Growlithe is available befoe you even get a single Badge)
Sandslash (Union Cave, it's actually pretty decent in Crystal)
Jolteon/Electabuzz (why do Grass and Electric pair so well?)
Espeon/Xatu (either works and before Cianwood too)
Lapras (I sense that Lance is cringing at this suggestion. It gets level-up Ice Beam but only appears once per week on Fridays, and you need four Badges and Surf to reach it. Worth the trouble though)

Totodile is the best, levels quickly, powers through Bugsy and Whitney with Rage and dabs on Morty with bite. Also hits really hard with Ice Punch and Surf.

I do agree on Espeon, hits like a goddamn truck with Psychic.

My suggestion would be something like

>Feraligatr (starter)
>Arcanine (all-around great stats)
>Kenya (gains levels fast, hits hard)
>Miltank/Tauros (both hit hard, pick your poison)
>Espeon (From Eevee)

And saves a spot for HM slave/whatever. All obtainable before the fourth badge too
