I did not play them, so i know nothing about S/M or the Ultra versions. I just want to know why they are so hated.

Cutscenes. USUM is one of the best games going by the raw gameplay though, so it you don't care too much about the amount of stops the game puts in your way, check it out.

Well, you know how for 20+ years, you've been the protagonist? Not anymore. You get demoted to a playing a supporting role in Lillie's family drama. She's also the most milquetoast little waste of space since Serena. Her brother is interesting at least.

Nothing really. They fall short compared to the classic games, but so far out of all Gen5+ nu-Pokemon garbage they are the best ones.

Instead of going into a coma, Lusamine actually learns to stop being a selfish, controlling bitch who almost ruins everything for everyone. I don't get how people hate the game revolving only around Lillie but also hate it for not doing that. USUM was sloppily done but had the better idea.

the first two thirds are the same so everything is set up to revolve around lillie family drama
then that entire plot is aborted and you go fight NECROZMA THE SUN EATING DRAGON which takes like 5 minutes and has fuck-all to do with the rest of the game
then you go fight the league

They hate story-based content in any mainline pokemon game because they are too half-assed to read dialogue. Fun fact: Pokemon is only JRPG series where fans outright don't want any story in despite how vast the world, lore and it's colorful cast of characters are.

The issue is that Pokemon's story in S/M (and in everything else) is ass. Not to mention other RPGs actually give you the option to bypass the cutscenes.

It's the Final Fantasy XIII of Pokémon except with graphics that look like a decent DS game, a fairly simplistic story, and a general lack of anything impressive. I mean if you're the kind of person that wants their game to be a literal hallway simulator, go for it. But fuck the endless tutorials, barriers, cutscenes, and mindless dialogue. Game Freak has managed to consistently impress me with how much they can fuck up more and more with each entry.
