I don't like the idea of a Pokémon making a stand-in doll to absorb attacks because it's silly and lame.
Substitute is what Barrier should have been. Same function, but thematically the Pokémon creates a force field to protect itself with instead of a plush toy. They should remove Substitute, bring back Barrier and make it work like that.
