The day they greenlight this idea is the day Showdown and Smogon die. They haven't done it yet because competitive players have very little overlap with the paypig userbase that shells out 60+ bucks annually, but as they burn through projects and phone apps become the new gaming standard it becomes more likely.

Its not just, shills though. Thats obviously the view GF has as well. Its why they tested the waters with ORAS and "the battle frontier project has started!!!!11!!1!".

The "obvious" view is that., to GF, online battles are a plenty suitable replacement for the battle tower, since hardly anyone used the battle tower to begin with. Welcome to the unfortunate position of being in a "hardcore" minority.

Why would you waste precious time on a battle facility that maybe 0.2% of players used when you can just encourage people to play online more instead? This becomes even more apparent when you realise that the battle tower in SWSH shares the same ranked system that online battles have - they want players to start at the battle tower to get a taste (and items) for competitive battles and then graduate to using the same systems online.

Then they need a better way to gatekeep competitive items. Like yeah 10BP is cheap, but I'm not going to lose my way through a hundred games to get a full set of items, mints, vitamins, etc. for making a team. They should just drop BP altogether and make it all cost Pokedollars. Then when you get to the end of the game with $1M saved up you can just buy the things to make a competitive team and jump in. Also hyper training shouldn't take level 100; if 50 is going to be the level you play it, it should be the level for hyper training.
