Not "terrible", "atrocious", etc, but just plain "OK". It was very polished in comparison to SwSh, both gameplay-wise, and graphically. The music was about 10x better than the nails-on-a-chalkboard offerings SwSh possessed. Only real prominent issue was the ultra-easy mode difficulty (which SwSh also suffers from). Ruby/Sapphire were perfectly fine. Sure, there wasn't much post-game content, but there was a massive improvement to graphics over the previous gen, a very well designed region with plenty of explorative elements, and perhaps most importantly, BERRIES. Not only berries, but their absolute best implementation out of any gen. It's sad when the first attempt outclasses the rest. The Battle Frontier in Emerald was so amazing that it grants a massive boost in tier over the base games. It's a shame they had to go and neuter the BF in both Platinum and HGSS.
