'Grass' is literally just the green shit on my front lawn. 'Plant' implies a whole world of different types of flora. How could they oversimplify something this blatantly?

Kusa means grass. Plant is shokubutsu, which is the word used by Oak at the start of RGB, where he calls Bulbasaur the "shokubutsu Pokemon". Which the English translation translates as "Plant Pokemon".

The only Pokemon type name that doesn't quite match up between languages is the Fire Type, which would be more accurately translated as "Flame Type". But the rest are straight enough translations.

There's also Fighting type, which would be more accurately translated as "martial arts type", but that sounds incredibly cumbersome for a type name.

You could just call it Martial type. Fighting already ties with Electric for the longest name for a type, and Martial would bring it down to 7 letters instead of 8.

It's not gold though, that's one of the problems. They could've used something else to convey its goldfish/koi origins.

Also, other lazy names I forgot to mention, Hypno, Slowpoke/Slowbro, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam. Gen 1 had a lot of clunky names. And it's a shame since theres good ones in there too, like Ekans/Arbok, Pikachu, and Gyarados.

Ghost is the larger category of all descriptors you gave. It is also the most evocative and familiar of the words, so it is good branding for an elemental type. Grass is better than plant but I agree it is not perfect. Grass is a really nice sound for the type.

Those are way worse in the original Japanese. Don't get me started on the fact that Kadabra's name is just some weird bastardization of an (((Israeli magician)))'s name.

I literally said it was obscure. But yes, it's a word. Most people are probably familiar with it from the English translation of Final Fantasy 6. It originates from the 1950s scifi story "Oddy and Id" by Alfred Bester.

Also, in case you're wondering, the original word in FF6 was "genjuu" (cryptid), the same word that was originally translated as "summoned monster" in FF4, then later as "Eidolon". The "esper" word choice came out of nowhere and had nothing to do with the Japanese text.

Reminder that no Grass-type Pokemon is based on a species of grass. The closest are Mow Rotom (a possessed lawnmower so presumably it has a bunch of grass inside of it) and Celesteela (partially based on bamboo but not even Grass-type).

Maybe, just maybe, they were looking for at least SOME unique words: flame instead of fire, steel instead of metal, and so on. With some it would have been too dumb probably (what do you replace water with?), but where they could add a 'unique' touch they did, to give identity to their game. Fire-water-wind-earth-light-dark is so overdone, anyone with a grain of salt in their brain would avoid using it if they had any hope to make their game memorable.
