With the sole exception of Alola, the first battle is just spamming Tackle/Pound/Scratch so matchups don't factor into it at all.

The point of the rival picking the starter that beats yours is so there is so that after you start, there is now a wall you can't beat with your starter. Of course, since alola starters pokemon have an elemental move at 5, I imagine because pound wars was boring, it would be too difficult to beat the first battle this way, so hau chooses the weaker.

I think that gen 8 does it pretty well, vs wooloo gives you a tutorial on how battles work, you immediately level up and are given a new toy. The new bab player now uses the new toy and learns what type advantages are. Those first battles *are* meant to be a tutorial after all.
It would suck major dong if this went the other way, you beat wooloo, get your elemental move and then waste a turn jabbing scorbunny with a stick and find out "hey btw fire is better than grass". I'm sure some of you would like that because despite not being hard, it is slightly... subversive is the best word i can come up with right now.

Of course the biggest problem with this is that you can't skip the tutorial in pokemon, because what if timmy skips the tutorial and can't figure out how the most intuitive RPG battle system works? If Leon did the tutorial battle, and Hop took the stronger starter I think hop would be a bigger threat, but it would make the champion fight where Leon uses the stronger starter against you anticlimactic because you just BTFO it with your starter. That's a problem with the system's overswingyness of type matchups and multipliers but heyho pokemon's kinda mediocre who fuckin knew.

I think this trend should stop. The rival shouldn't choose a starter basing by your choice, they should choose whoever he likes, or not letting them choose it and having other pokémon. Why is so difficult for gamefreak doing something like that? Your rival could pick a random starter, or one scripted because they likes it.

Honestly it's a mechanic for babbies either way to teach them rock-paper-scissors. Though it's worse with them choosing the weaker one so they can rehash the same "dehehe~" type rival over and over again. There are precedents for rivals who don't need a starter at all.

Have two rivals and give one the stronger one and one the weaker one. They did it in Black and White and it was perfect, but Game Freak has been distancing itself from everything good about Gen 5 for 10 fucking years.
