Dark didn't exist yet, so Poison covered evil and sneakiness as well as literal poison.
Hence the ninja gym leader using poison types and Umbreon being poison in the Spaceworld demo.

Vampire bats are like mosquitoes, they get diseases and viruses from the animals they drink blood from. It actually makes sense why it's poison. (Mind you it barely learns too many poison moves naturally, for a while poison fang was it's only real natural poison move till it got cross poison. Which rely on it making contact, like passing an illness off to the next victim.)

I dunno, ninja were known for their use of poison historically so that's not weird.

There's really nothing Dark about Umbreon even now. It still secretes poison and it still isn't particularly evil or sneaky. They just wanted type variety, like how Jellicent got made a Ghost at the last minute.

Gen 1 level-up learnsets were terrible because you were expected to use TM's.

Most venomous snakes cause your blood to congeal and/or tissue to dissolve, but a small handful cause you to bleed more easily.
Zubat is a vampire bat which fits into the classification of venomous on a technicality.

Poison was like a substitute for Dark until Dark was actually introduced.

It feels like Game Freak had their own preconceived ideas of types having to have specific combinations instead of just what's necessary. Like all of the Grass/Poison types, the Rock/Ground types, Normal/Flying types, etc. This is probably Poison/Flying because they had a preconceived notion of what a bat should be typing-wise instead of what's necessary or what makes sense for the creature itself.

It's not super solid but I feel the concept could work. Would be better than the super predictable Dark/Flying bat.

Today it would be, but without Dark it makes perfect sense that a ninja would specialize in Poison types.
It's not a thematic stretch at all, it's just that a better match was introduced later.

Which is where "Blacky" comes from, a combo of Black+Lucky that references the positive superstition of black felines, pic related.
I think Umbreon was meant to be an ironic design, in Japan it would be considered lucky, but the poison/dark typing is likely referencing the bad luck in Western culture.
