Onix uses his stone wisdom and sees that Gyarados actually has a whole 2nd type, Flying, which is weak to the Onix type. With the proper training and clothing, Onix is capable of moving faster than a Gyarados and knocking him out with his signature move before he even gets the chance to fight back. Gyarados never stood a chance.
