I still don’t understand how anyone who runs pure meta feels good about any wins they achieve. It’s not your team that won, it’s the meta’s team. Getting the ball into the opponent's goal is the equivalent of KOing your opponent's Pokemon, rather than any specific strategy.
There are different ways to shoot the ball into the goal, and it would be boring if everyone did it the exact same way every time.

My first legit shiny in Shield, Square Drakloak from a random Den. I knew Mimikyu became meta in Sun/Moon but since I don't play competitive I didn't know Dragapult was since I mostly tend to stuff my team with Ghosts.

That’s kinda just what happens when a meta for a game is figured out. What’s great is when that meta changes frequently in fresh and interesting ways and/or has enough variety at a high level to keep things interesting.

Pokémon has neither of those things, which is pretty funny considering how many Pokémon there are and that rushed yearly releases should shake things up fairly frequently for a while, but people already have stuff figured out again.

We should definitely see a shake-up when Isle of Armor drops since it will be adding brand new moves in addition to 200 new (old) pokemon.
For the most part though I'm glad GF doesn't do balance patches. Japanese developers seem to be the only ones left who are willing to let a meta develop on its own.
