Masuda said that they were planning to release Green but they realized that the west has the color blue as the opposite/rival color to Red, unlike Japan where Green is the opposite/rival color to Red.

I got blue after first watching the anime. I thought it was a bootleg because everything looked retarded and I returned it. Got yellow later and thought that was the first legit game for some time.
Blue/Red elitists are just nostalgiafags, because everyone's favorite gen more or less was when everyone at school was playing that game.
In my country for example schoolkids (including me) started playing pokemon en masse during R/S, as such I feel those were the best, even if blue was my first game.
