Is it better to have high health and average defense, or average health and high defense? Or should both health and defense be fortified and forsake other stats?

I’m asking for Golisopod and how its EV should be spread.

take the product of your hp and either defense.
that's how bulky you are.
it's why blissey maxes defense EVs and ferrothorn maxes HP EVs, since those are a raw 64 point boost instead of a % like natures and in-battle boosts. it's better to apply those 64 points to a low stat.

Health is always more important than defenses.
Speed is always more important than health on offensive mons. Though there are exceptions, even Pokemon like Golisopod wants to be running a solid amount of speed. Otherwise you risk getting outsped by the defensive walls you should be trying to break through, and if you're getting outsped by them it makes it infinitely harder to KO them when they switch into your attacks because they can heal up before you're able to finish them off.

To put things more specifically, you want a stat spread like
>EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Spe
>Adamant Nature

If you're just playing on Switch against randoms then you could probably settle for something like
>EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk
>Adamant Nature
or
>EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
>Adamant Nature

I'm pretty sure you get diminishing returns the higher your stat is. Golisopod's HP is lower than its Def, so Def might be better. I'll be right back after I run the numbers.

What if you were to take the Assault Vest into consideration? That makes it wiser to invest into HP, Atk, and Spd as you detailed, right?

Okay, I did the math and you do get diminishing returns.
Maxing HP means that Golisopod takes 82% of the damage it would with no investment.
Meanwhile, maxing Def means it takes 83% of the damage it would with no investment.
I also tested this with special. The 82% for max HP applies to special as well, but Golisopod takes 77% as much damage from special attacks with max SpD.
So yes, EV's put into lower stats are more valuable.

Why would you give Golisopod an assault vest? It's not a special tank. Golisopod should either be given an offensive item or an item that increases his longevity like leftovers or sitrus berry.
The only use I could see for assault vest is if you're playing doubles or something, but even then you'd probably be better off with an offensive item, sitrus berry, or another mon entirely.

Well, since I’m gearing this Golisopod towards offense, isn’t better to give it a Shell Bell? Leftovers better fits my Corviknight, and Sitrus for my Arcanine.

The amount of damage you would need to do each turn in order to make shell bell a viable option is staggering. Shell bell is a completely worthless item. I wouldn't even recommend it for single player.

You try to keep them balanced by boosting the lower stat with EVs. However if your mon has recovery options like Recover or Leftovers HP becomes slightly more important, while if it carries defense boosting moves like Bulk Up the defenses do.

252 spreads are fine if theres absolutely no reason to invest into anything but an offensive and speed stat. But in VGC its pretty important to build around the meta. You want to build a pokemon that will survive certain attacks while carefully allocating and spreading EVs accordingly

this actually requires a bit of knowledge about the meta and damage calcs which most players lack which is how people just say fuck it and build 252 mons and just hope for the best
