Maybe they think players are too soft and it's a nice vs mean thing, which GF obviously choosing to emphasize what good people the rivals really are. I personally don't give a shit about that. It's not like they'll ever make a rival as mean as Silver again, a guy who steals, bullies, and says a sick Pokemon should just die. Characters should make a strong impression. Don't water them down because it might hurt babby's feelings. Shit, YOU look like a bully in XY based on how badly your rivals/buddies take being beaten by you.
