I'm currently replaying both Platinum and SoulSilver in the wake of the redownloadable events that are distributed through the DNS exploit and...

I don't care that parts /vp/ still oppose this, but Gen 4 had something unique I can hardly put into words. Can you help me? Why exactly do so many think that these games have so much SOUL?

Please don't start genwars, I'm just genuinely interested in what made these games just feel so good to play...

Because it's just classic Pokemon with all the things you came to expect. Also because the region are based on Jap which, as a filthy gaijin, i always found more fascinating than say France or America

I was really annoyed when i played BW at first because of the pixelated battle backsprites, those undetailed polygonal 3D circles where the pokemon usually is positioned instead of the 2D more detailed ones (BW2 fixed that but still) of gen 4, the UI being this transparent minimalistic thing instead of the cool customizable frames we always had, and of course the removal of features like following pokemon, berry planting etc.

That might still be nostalgia. Have you ever seen pics of your parents when they were younger and felt nostalgic, even though you didnt exist at that time?

I'm thinking the same happens with you. You see these older games made in the past, the origins of what you played as a kid and feel like you missed something.

They just need enough to get rid off the east. The west can (rightfully) go back to Mexico. Alaska can (rightfully) go back to Russia. Hawaii can (rightfully) go back to being an independent state instead of being enslaved by mutts

Well I think you're...partially correct. The games did take a bad shift when regions started being based on non-Japanese places. Regions are more like theme parks now. Unova was still good but it has some odd designs. I'm from New York and I'm not gonna act like I am completely knowledgeable on the state oe geography, but there is an entire desert between Castelia and Nimbasa, and Castelia is between said desert and a forest. I think the biomes could have been handled better.

I'm actually playing through Diamond again, I don't mind the slowness at all this time around. What I really appreciate is the storytelling, There isn't another pokemon game that manged to provide a lore-filled exploration experience with mythologies of the region as well as DPPt and HGSS did. I do like Kalos for its history as well, but my all-time favourite was cinnabar island's mansion and discovering Mewtwo's past in the journals left behind.

Also Giratina is awesome, and weirdly cute

Not him but I started frlg and skipped rse and gsc, yet when I played both later, I hated rse and love gsc, I just like the style, music and general game mechanics of older games. I wouldn't call it nostalgia, just an appreciation of that specific type of game.

I can't speak for Kalos and Galar, since I haven't played SWSH or XY, but Alola to me seemed like a pretty natural region for the most part. Mount Lanakila is based on a mountain with high elevation that actually exists in Hawaii so snow being there is at least realistic. I wholeheartedly agree with you on a desert not fighting New York. In addition to what you mentioned, Lentimas Town seems weird for a New York Region

For me the Poketch and underground mining was a lot of the fun for DPP. In HGSS I think they had a very solid basis by using GSC and just having to create the game with the new tools of gen 4. They also added little things like the arceus event to give birth to Giratina, Dialga, or Palkia. I really thing HGSS needed the Sevii Islands or Orange Islands to make it feel complete.

my opinion echoes OP pretty much and I played my first mainline game in my mid 20s only a few years ago, there really is a charm to it, though it is not God and new games do some things better (and worse)
