If you are going up against a several thousand year gengar, mismagius or spiritomb you will have to get creative. Some items can help you like seals or incense if you know what your doing. You can also get the help of other people to preform a ritual. It's best the seek the help of a ghost type expert in this case. Most places where powerful ghosts are a concern will have a local ghost type gym, even if it isn't part of the league. Ghost don't normally last long enough to get this powerful, they likely have some history and weaknesses. If they are a local spirit someone has likely already defeated them before, and you can just do the same thing.
You are particularly susceptible to the ghost type that is trying to posses you. Maybe you trusted a duskull and they just revealed their true nature. Maybe you let them in as part of a deal or for some other reason. There's not much you can do here. You will likely wake up a few days later in front of an exorcist. The best way to avoid this is to be weary of ghost types you don't know well, and don't sell your body to them.
