depends on what you're looking for. SMT and its spinoffs (Devil and Persona) are widely regarded.

yokai watch has crazy enough more atmosphere and better writing albeit a more cheesy comedic tone.

temtem is trying to be a mechanically superior pokemon.

Tohou Puppet Dance is a pretty mechanically solid pokemon-like as well.

and then there's just, you know, playing old roms and hacks.

When you mention Temtem, you have to clarify that it's an online multiplayer game. I think a lot of people were turned off and surprised by that when it released.

people shit on digimon for being all over the place, but the JRPG style games rather than the monster raising simulator ones... they're pretty good.
If you like the SMT:Persona Half monster catcher half visual novel blend, but don't like having to fuse you like your pals less unexpendable, the Cyber Sleuth series might especially fit nicely for you.

Monster Rancher is total ass for the sole fact that they give you an accuracy percentage in battle that seems like they're outright lying to you. Still the only franchise I've ever played where on multiple instances, across multiple games, I'd miss six or so times in a row with an accuracy of 99%.

The main shin megami tensei series does the monster collecting aspect better. Persona focuses on using one demon or persona at a time per party member. Where as in mainline you can have an army of the bastards.

your party consists of four thieves who can summon personas
only the MC can switch personas in battle, the rest are too retarded
you get new personas by either convincing enemies to join your squad, or putting some of your personas to the guillotine to fuse a new one

TemmyTemTems okay. Wouldn’t advise getting it yet as it has critical design issues as of now (a main movement mechanic is taken away as part of the story, but the story doesn’t progress far enough to get it back so some areas become permanently unaccessable until they expand the story) but it may improve later. Battles are all doubles and a bit tougher than Pokémon so that’s nice. Breeding is aids and needs to be retuned (50% gender split in the wild but 80%+ skewed gender birth rates) and cheapened but the potential is there. Shinies are actually rare (1-6000) and they can all follow you so that’s cute. Hope that helps.
