OK /vp/ I haven't played a pokémon game in like 3 years and I looking to get back into it. So is there some chronological order I should go by and are the spin-offs worth looking into?

it depends on what you're searching for
HGSS are pretty solid, while for the 3ds era SM are the best game
usum is actually hard with the exp share off but the story is somehow worst than the original one
the only good spin offs are probably the mystery dungeon serie and the ranger one
I liked pokemon conquest as well

The games are all separate from one another apart from BW and BW2. You can play whichever game you want first. They have unfortunately been going downhill in recent years though. I recommend starting with Emerald, Platinum, or BW if you haven't played all of them yet.

Some spin-offs are absolutely worth it. The Orre games and Mystery Dungeon are just as good if not better than the main series and Ranger, Pokepark and Snap are also good. Start with either Colosseum or Explorers of Sky.

Third versions are your friend first of all. Crystal, Emerald and Platinum are all fantastic, but I highly recommend HGSS for an all around Pokemon experience. Gen 5 is the last good Gen and the 3DS games can be safely skipped.

As for spin-offs, PMD is the best one.

Also if you decide play it, I think I remember having issues patching it. Use r*ddit in your search, the dev posts pre-patched versions there.

For gameplay yeah but the characters and story are better in SM

That being said, anyone who plays Pokemon for the characters and story are playing for the wrong reasons lol, go play something else if you want a good story

play them in order from where you left off imo, im doing the same and its a comfy ride, only thing id suggest is waiting before you play the remakes like frlg hgss and play them last instead, its refreshing to, after playing nu-mons back to back, jump back into classic mons

I think that I'll most likely go in the following order Red++, HGSS, Emerald, BW2 and conclude it with SM. Does that sound alright to you? Also should I consider replacing the originals with rom hack or is that just wrong?
