So here's a question. What Pokemon game would you recommend to someone who has not played a mainline Pokemon game since Red and Blue and wants to get back into it? I've heard mixed things about the newest installment, is there somewhere better to restart at?

To someone who has never ever played Pokemon and doesn't know shit about the mechanics, I'd unironically recommend XY. Easy, big dex for varied teams, flashy gimmicks to catch their eye, best cover Legendaries
If someone actually did play a little bit and knows more or less what to expect, I'd say BW but I admit I'm biased with that one, I'm not sure it'd be necessarily the best for a comeback.

HeartGold and SoulSilver will be familiar enough for you. After that Platinuim and BW BW2

Then Play Emerald.

Then play SM and USUM

All other pokemon games suck.

Play through the good ones in chronological order: Crystal, then Emerald, then Platinum, then FireRed, then HeartGold or SoulSilver, then Black or White and the sequel. Stop there, don’t bother with a single 3DS or Switch game

You’ll appreciate the upgrades as time goes on and see where the games went, without the disappointment. Side games like the Gamecube ones set in Orre, or Mystery Dungeon are fun too

I'd recommend Crystal if you have a lot of nostalgia for the gameboy aesthetic, it's in a lot of ways a sequel to Red and Blue and you can play more modern games from there. FRLG or HGSS are good choices too if you're not as nostalgic for old hardware but want something somewhat connected to what you know and with a ton of content.

The 3DS games are ok if you want to be eased back into the series with pretty modern hardware but the DS games are more fleshed out overall, they're worse places to start though (besides HGSS and maybe BW). Also do this >>42774231 if you haven't, regardless of what you play first.

I would go with X/Y. Those game have a small handful of legends, as well as a large, varied amount of Pokemon to catch. The mons are from all gens at that time, so you can ease into learning some of the newer mons with it, but there are a good amount of Kanto mons if you want to get something familiar. They introduce Fairy types, which is the newest type in the series, and also introduce Mega Evolutions. I'd say it's a decent starting point for newer Pokemon, and since it's on the 3DS, you can also get the VC R/B/Y and G/S/C and also gen 7 games if you end up liking X/Y and want to continue trying newer games. And if you don't like X/Y, the 3DS can play gen 4-5 games too.
