In general yes, giving a character a name as incredibly generic as Mary is an awful idea (especially since Pokemon characters generally don't have surnames). It's the female equivalent to John, the most boring name possible in the English speaking world. This is especially true for Marnie though given her punk aesthetic, hometown, and family. Why wouldn't she have a more interesting name?

Yes and no; it's closer to being pronounced like Marie, but it's spelled with a ィ, which usually denotes '-y', hence probably why it's romanized as Mary. I still think calling her Mary is stupid though, because her name isn't spelled like how "Mary" is usually rendered

マリィ is how the French name Marie is rendered in nip. It's not the English name, it's the French one.

Rosemary is spelled ローズマリー, so it doesn't make sense to call her Mary because of that. The spelling is different.
