Well, Minions movies sell out theaters as well but nobody actually talks about them once they're over.

Pokemon is the Star Wars of video games. There is literally no fuck-up too big. You underestimate how quick people are to dump a game, particulary children. Look at any steam achievement, even the one that are only "do the first quest" have a really low completion rate.

The servers ARE full, you dunce. They set the maximum number of players per server to a number people would consider low, but still manages to lag. More players per server would mean more lag. Fewer players per server would mean less lag, but an emptier world. Gamefreak, in their infinite "wisdom," decided this current experience was the best option - as opposed to, for example, optimizing their shit netcode.
As for afk players, the only way to detect that is to time inactivity. Games will generally send the player a notification that, after a period of time, they will be logged out for inactivity. I have no idea if sw/sh does this, but I would not be surprised if they didn't.

Do you have ANY idea how online services work?

Technically it does "disconnect" if you are "afk". by not updating your stamps if you are not doing any online related activity like searching for random trades.

If you want a constant connection and stamp updates, make a Trainer card trade search with passcode on(you'll probably get a trade once every 2 hours), so you'll constantly receive stamp updates.

Its also probably because I'm near japan, I managed to complete the pokedex(missing Zacian) by just doing max raid and random trade. It is very active in my timezone especially if it's 7pm to 3am in Japan.
