Pretty good. It was an interesting mixup to the formula and enough of a challenge that it required one or two specialized mons, at a reasonably high level, to lock the encounter down long enough to catch. Thinking FREE MEGA LEGENDARY is better in any way is just the kind of retarded apologia that supports and encouraged the decline of the mainline series since entering 3D

It's an objective fact that platinum (well, diamond and pearl to be technical) made the process of finding roamers easier by always allowing you to see the map without opening and closing. What could you possibly think HGSS did better than plat in regards to roamers??? I guess showing the icon of WHICH roamer you're looking for is nice, but that doesn't result in time saved/an easier process.

Good idea but badly executed. They should of fled in three turns instead of instantly. Gives you a chance to do more than put them to sleep and doesn't completely limit your Pokemon choice to something that can trap it.

It's not like you have to go to a specific part of the route to get them and usually by the time you trigger them you've already been to most of the routes anyway (and if not you still have a decent chunk of the story to go through like in Johto so you wouldn't even prioritize chasing them then).

Roaming Pokemon were an awesome idea, but the execution left a lot to be desired. Forcing the player to track them down and trap them added to the challenge in a way that you're just not going to get through the normal rules of Pokemon's battle system, and running into his massively powerful monster when you were just out exploring and not deliberately looking for them added to the sense of adventure.

However, I think they could've stuck around for a couple turns rather than just fleeing immediately, and I would've given some sort of rhyme or reason to how they moved across the map other than pure RNG. Like maybe have Raikou preferentially gravitate toward Goldenrod because cities have a lot of electricity or something like that, just to throw an idea out there. Also, their location on the map should be available to the player right off the bat. As they were, it was often just a chore to track them down. Still, I definitely have vivid memories of how excited I was all through the process of finally catching Raikou as a kid as well as how elated I was to finally catch it, so I definitely think there's potential there.

I never once had much of an issue with roaming encounters and don't understand how people did. I always run into them several times by accident, so in the post game I carry around a meanlooker and before i know it I caught them all. Wow so hard. I think the issue is people go out of their way to hunt them down, which, with the way the roaming is calculated, is probably a fucking pain. If more people just ignored them and let them come to u then no one would have an issue. It's the same with shinies and false swipe. Just try and be prepared and let them come to u when they feel like it

The thing I hated the most about them was that they changed location whenever you changed location. That idea runs so counter to the idea of chasing something down that it's dumb, it's like some kind of Scooby Doo cartoon with them running into different doors and barely missing each other. They should have just moved location every ten minutes or something.

If they didn't flee as soon as you found them I think it would be more tolerable but then it's just a matter of finding them once. I think that making them all like what they did with Suicune in HGSS and sorta like the birds in X&Y. You have to find them in randomly generated places but never go in to a battle you just see them in the overworld and they run maybe like 3 or 4 times then become stationary in a location that fits their personality and typing. Like X&Y but less shoehorned and annoying.

Roamers are ok if they have somewhat fair tactics.
Mespirit is probably the worst of them because of its mechanics where as soon as you enter a town/route it would move on, so you had to kind of "trap" it on one route and hope you could intercept it on one side of the map.

I don't think the birds/dogs/Lat@s did that, it was basically just a random location and the need to weed them out (which was super easy if you had a stronger Pokemon and repel)

I think it'd be interesting adding one in a game like SwSh with the open area where something can move around. The Elgyem and Beheeyem "telport" movement is very cool and I think could work well with a legendary that roams around.

Now that i think about it, a roaming legendary of a large Pokemon would be really hilarious.
Imagine a huge Pokemon like Steelix sized in SwSh's overworld randomly popping in, or you see it moving in the background and have to approach it.

Could also be cool with a fishing mechanic maybe/having certain Pokemon in your party could attract it.

The point of roaming pokemon was how they were so rare and powerful to get.
You're not supposed to get strong pokemon easily, like any other RPG the best weapons/items are much harder to get.

People complaining about roaming pokemon brainlets, the cancer killing pokemon and the reason why we got sword and shield.

If a fucking 10 year old can catch a roaming pokemon without a master ball you should be able to do it too.

The problem with this logic is that roaming Pokemon usually aren't particularly powerful compared to other legendary Pokemon that don't roam. You don't get the impression that a Pokemon is super powerful because it constantly runs away from you, you get the impression that the game is just trying to waste your time by sending you on a wild goose chase. In terms of power they're nothing special, at that point in the game you could knock them out easily. They just exist to give you something difficult to do. Which isn't a terrible thing, but it's just annoying more often than not. Especially since roaming Pokemon ignore the usual rules by doing stuff like fleeing while asleep.

This. If you need to solve a riddle or a dungeon to get to a legendary, it'll be a kino encounter. Mewtu in HGSS, the Regis in the Hoenn games, these should be the guidelines for GF, not just a wall of text and a "I think it wants you to catch it."

This was handled pretty well in X/Y with Moltres/Zapdos/Articuno, I think. You had to chase them down a fixed number of times, during which they'd run away immediately without you being able to do anything, until they'd decide to stay in a fixed location where you could battle them normally

Used to be that, as a gameplay mechanic in a monster catching game, it was cool in that it was a little extra effort and you felt rewarded actually tracking the thing down, but it was a nightmare if you actually wanted to use the thing competitively. It's much easier to get a viable legendary if you can just soft reset in front of a static encounter.

That being said, I'd love to see them reintroduce the mechanic now that Nature mints and Bottle Caps are a thing.
