I understand this point of view but man, it seems like such a cop-out, especially since in the Pokemon universe their physics is at least grounded somewhat in reality. As an example, Ride Pokemon are Pokemon that can easily carry humans, like Charizard and Machamp. You don't see Pidgey being used as Ride Pokemon (which is ironic since they could be used for flight in-game).

I dunno. Yeah, magical creatures and all that, it just seems needlessly silly.

Lemme stop you there chief. Both TPC and Masuda have said that they don't think of the world of Pokemon as Earth.

There's tons of reasons to doubt it. It's self contradictory, and inconsistent with the characterisations of the Pokemon. African elephant, Magcargo should burn a hole through the ground that melts it towards the center of the earth, etc.

It's literally true. The Pokemon aren't actually just standing there taking turns, they're moving around the battlefield and dodging each other's attacks.

Indian elephant is a holdover from before real animals were retconned out of the series.

Magcargo doesn't need any explanation beyond "it's a fantasy world", and even then, Fire Pokemon are established to be able to choose whether their fire or whatever causes harm.

The anime staff work closely with Game Freak during production and follows Pokedex entries and reference sheets from them, so you'd be wrong on that front. The anime usually is where Pokemon are actually seen doing the stuff the dex says they can do.

They've covered this before. Ponyta/Rapidash can choose whether or not their flames will burn their rider. Sharpedo can turn its Rough Skin off at will. Croagunk's entire fingers glow purple when using Poison Jab on an enemy, but only the fingertips glow when it uses it on Brock, because it's using less poison.

Tl;dr It's magic, Pokemon can choose whether or not their bodies hurt others.

The most reasonable explanation I've heard is that the Pokedex is a tool to scan specimens and update data accordingly for pokemon professors. The text you see in-game is just a small generic description of a creature that has already been studied or at least known about. What actually matters is the datamining that professors get out of the dex on a case by case basis

Mantis shrimps, or stomatopods, are marine crustaceans of the order Stomatopoda. Mantis shrimps typically grow to around 10 cm (3.9 in) in length.
