People used to go out and play pokemon with other people and trade and shit. That was the appeal of Pokemon, not expending 500 dollars on games and consoles. Gen III was a great time to play pokemon and you underage fags will never be able to experience it again. Going to an event and waiting in line so you could get a ticket that allowed you to go to Birth Island and catch Deoxys made the task of completing the pokedex a much more adventurous experience than just being able to catch every mon without leaving your room.
