Honestly, take my view or leave it, but my take is that when games were really new, like for our parents' generation, women just didn't touch them outside of maybe pac-man or mario or frogger. Men had an extra generation of a head start, which is why it's only now that women are coming in to most gaming communities.
I do think you're right about niche titles; it's gonna be the zoomer generation where girls finally get really into niche stuff. I watch like, Mandalore and Sseth on youtube for game recs and I rarely see other women playing, like, Sunless Skies or something. But when I recommend niche titles people seem open to them.
