Every fossil mon from the first five gens has a base stat total of 495 except for Aerodactyl (515) and Archeops (567). So Defeatist is ostensibly to balance out Archeops having better stats than all the other fossils. For comparison, Tyrantrum and Aurorus each have BSTs of 521, while the Galar fossils all have 505.

They're only bad because of power creep, in a vacuum those stats honestly do warrant a nerf, I mean, even now it's bst is crazy high. Darmanitan is obliterating the meta atm with less bulk and less speed, albeit more attack given it's ability

Its ability is far more debilitating than its stats warrant. Even if Archeops would be good without its ability, that's the point. Its ability is so awful that it's just an objectively worse Aerodactyl.

The movepool is more of a problem than the stats, those stats would be crazy if it could go CB Brave Bird for Flying STAB instead of Acrobatics.

Archeops in the current Meta would be the fifth fastest relevant Pokemon in VGC, BS, and OU, has U-turn, would hit just as hard Rhyperior (currently the strongest attacking Rock type), can beat FerroPex cores, and even has decent Utility options.

archeops has the highest bst of any non-legendary or pseudo other than wishiwashi who has a similar ability

its stats are also distributed more to be an offensive powerhouse than something like arcanine. though frankly with powercreep it wouldn't be the craziest thing for it to get a non-detrimental ability

OP is asking why Archeops needed Defeatist when (in his view) the stats are underwhelming on their own, my point is that the stats are good but being forced to pick between Flying STAB and an item would suck.

Gamefreak considers Arcanine a benchmark for "normal" mons for some reason. Everything above it in terms of BST is either a legend, mythical, mega, UB, or has some shitty ability that nerfs them
